Habemus canis!!!

So today I finally got a dog!

After months of just putting it off, today was the day I decided to come back home with a dog in my hand.

It happened very suddenly. My roommate Juan sent me a link of a post about a dog (he knew I’ve been wanting a dog for months now) who was going to be put down this Sunday (he might get lucky and last until Monday) at the Austin shelter. He was a beatiful one-year-old rottweiler mix. I got excited and my friend Rali was nice enough to start the process of calling the shelter and getting info while I was getting all the paperwork ready.

Then bad news came. Turns out the post we saw was a week old, and the dog had already been put to sleep :-( . This wave of sadness came over me because I was about to save a life and get a new friend, but then I was too late. I decided I didn’t want to let that happen again, so with our hearts still heavy from the news, Rali, Juan, Rafa (my other roommate) and I went to the shelter. I couldn’t save that dog, but that didn’t mean I couldn’t save one today.

When we got there came the hardest part: deciding which dog I wanted. They were all very pretty and they all needed a home, the problem was that I could only take one. I fell in love with this beautiful three-month old pit bull-terrier who was hanging around with her sister. They were both cute, but since I could only take one home I went for the one that caught my heart first. Then a thought came through Rafa’s head: what if he got the other sister.

We knew it was crazy, but there was one problem… puppies!!! We couldn’t refuse, so we ended up getting one each. So now our house is like full of life brought by two very active (and demanding) female puppies that will be getting most of our attention the next couple of weeks. Mine, which is a dark brown, has been named Indy, just like Indiana Jones’s dog. Rafa called her puppy Tacuba, after the mexican band Café Tacvba.

Soon I’ll post some pics of them. We already took some, but I’m too tired to upload them to my computer right now :p.

Btw, our friends Abby and Chad were very very nice and brought us their dog’s old crate for crate training. That will be a life (and furniture) saver.

I’m so happy I have a dog now! Yay!!

Y como se llama tu perro? Te hicieron examenes para ver si eres apto para cuidar un perro? No estas loco? Estas el tiempo suficiente en casa? Le daras el mismo cariño y atencion que le daban en el refugio >_<?
