Book I read: Serial

This week’s winner and first featured book: Serial by Jack Killborn and Blake Crouch.

The premise is very simple. Hitchhiking is bad because the driver might be a serial killer trying to get you. Picking up hitchhikers is bad because one of them might be a serial killer and kill you (or land you in jail as poor Ben Stiller learned while chasing Mary). Get one of each, and you’ve got a recipe for intellectual gore, the kind of sadistic disdain for life we’ve all learned to love in Eli Roth movies, but with a refined touch like the one Quentin Tarantino or Robert Rodriguez would give one of their masterpieces.

Why am I comparing a book to movies? Because reading this very short story reminded me of the recently released Grindhouse, and that is definitively a good thing.

I don’t want to spoil the story for anyone, so I’ll just say it’s really good, and what makes it even more interesting is the method used for writing it. You may have noticed this was a collaboration between two authors. They did it in a way that they could face each other as enemies and improvise to make the story move in their favor. All of this is explained at the end of the book, so I’d suggest reading it.

To finish this, a simple pros and cons list.

Cons

  • Only available at the Kindle Store
  • May be a little too graphic for sensitive people. I didn’t think it was that bad, but I’ve been desensitized by countless movies and shows by now

Pros

  • Fast paced horror story with lots of action (gory action mind you)
  • Short and easy to read. Skip American Idol tonight, it’s worth it
  • Did I mention it’s FREE at the Kindle Store?

A final thought… what are you still doing reading this crappy blog when you could be reading an awesome book for FREE!!!

Seriously, go, NOW.
